Beginners Questions • [Hardware] Where is my usb drive?

Whenever a usb drive is plugged into the computer should it not show on the desktop? I want to copy files which were downloaded into the /Downloads folder to drag into the drive but cannot due to the drive not showing on the desktop. What am I missing here?
