I've been using Ubuntu MATE for a long time.
I don't intend to immediately list the differences I've noticed after switching to Debian 12 theoretically with the same desktop environment.
With MATE User Manager, I somehow managed to assign different languages to different users. I can confirm this because language support works for Firefox ESR, LibreOffice, and Thunderbird. In general, it seems to work whenever there's a language pack available. However, if I want to use a language other than English in Chromium, the only way I've found is by launching it with a command like
The most pressing issue I still haven't solved is the language support for desktop items. When Italian is the selected language, I’m not asked if I want, for example, Desktop to be translated to Scrivania. Most of the desktop elements remain in English, though I’ve noticed that at least the date appears in Italian when the language of the Desktop is supposed to be Italian. I noticed that Ubuntu MATE uses GNOME language packs, like language-pack-gnome-it. In my Debian installation no GNOME language packs are installed, and none are available in the repositories configured with the Debian 12 installation. What am I missing?
