This is an incredibly niche problem so I don't have much hope but I'm out of ideas so posting here.
I have an Asus M11AD desktop with 16G RAM and an Intel Core i5-4440S CPU. The video card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. I run Debian 12.6 MATE with the Nvidia driver from the repo.
I run a NASA developed program called DOUG, available to the general public if you jump through the paperwork hoops. https://www.nasa.gov/doug-1-72-download/ It's a visualization program for the International Space Station. I used it at work and it's handy to keep up with what's going on now that I'm retired; NASA frequently updates the data.
The trouble is that it's a Windows program. When I was running Ubuntu 20.04 and prior, it worked great under wine, no problems at all.
But in Debian, it runs under wine, but the window where the graphics are displayed is just black. The menus will drop down, etc, but no display at all.
The truly weird thing is that I can't even run it in an Ubuntu virtual machine. I have a working Ubuntu 20.04 box that I use only for this program - and I'd sure like to convert it to Debian if I could just fix this - and it runs DOUG great under wine. But if I clonezilla this box, then create a virtual box VM of it, it boots and runs just fine, but when I run DOUG in the VM, DOUG crashes.
It's like Debian hates DOUG, lol. Every...single...other..thing I did in Ubuntu works as well or better in Debian.
It may be a wine version thing. In Ubuntu 20.04 it was wine 5 and in Debian it's wine 8. But this application is way too niche to have anything about it in the wine hq database. And usually higher versions of wine work better.
If anyone has any idea about approaches I could use, I would appreciate hearing them.
