(So in the spirit of disclosure - This is a repost of something I put on reddit. I have been trying all day to get on here so I posted there first, I hope this is not a rule violation - Also this is a present installation of testing but it's about an install with the same errors when trying 12 - just assumed installation seemed best )

BTW - I have done a bunch of ddg google and searching on here. I didn't find anything about on install - Some things about accell gone after an u[grade etc, but I was just unable to find anything I could point to ad say this'll fix it

Hey all - some troubles here. I'm trying to get out from under the Canonical thumb, and trying to go pure deb. Was wary at first, the whole Debian stable is debian stale thing but I wanted to take the plunge, So I got copies of both 12 and testing.. This is to go on an old (9 year ish) laptop, so i expected some problems. I'm having troubles with this radeon card. I can install 12 or testing, but then it boots to a black screen. I can boot to Mint or Lubuntu (which im on now) as a live usb and work like that with proper graphics and resolution, etc.

Specs are: ProBook 6460b, i5 processor, 12G ram - yes weak for sure

Code:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Seymour [Radeon HD 6400M/7400M Series] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])DeviceName: 0Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Radeon HD 6470MFlags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 31Memory at c0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]Memory at d0300000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]I/O ports at 2000 [size=256]Expansion ROM at 000c0000 [disabled] [size=128K]Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3Capabilities: [58] Express Legacy Endpoint, MSI 00Capabilities: [a0] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+Capabilities: [100] Vendor Specific Information: ID=0001 Rev=1 Len=010 <?>Capabilities: [150] Advanced Error Reporting
Kernel driver in use: radeon

Kernel modules: radeon, amdgpu

On boot, all the os's show these errors:

Code:

[drm:uvd_v1_0_start [radeon]] *ERROR* UVD not responding, trying to reset the VCPU!!! (several)[ 14.161589] [drm:uvd_v1_0_start [radeon]] *ERROR* UVD not responding, giving up!!![ 14.161693] radeon 0000:01:00.0: failed initializing UVD (-1).[ 15.168242] [drm:r600_ib_test [radeon]] *ERROR* radeon: fence wait timed out.[ 15.168350] [drm:radeon_ib_ring_tests [radeon]] *ERROR* radeon: failed testing IB on GFX ring (-110).[ 15.168425] [drm:radeon_device_init [radeon]] *ERROR* ib ring test failed (-110).[ 15.172487] radeon 0000:01:00.0: [drm] Skipping radeon atom DIG backlight registration
(again I mention that the card works - mostly - correctly on the live boots. strange artifact near the mouse, but not involved)

I don't presently have log entries from debian, but as a starting point here is some more from dmesg on lubuntu:

Code:

[ 3.807467] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled.[ 3.807573] radeon 0000:01:00.0: vgaarb: deactivate vga console[ 3.809381] [drm] initializing kernel modesetting (CAICOS 0x1002:0x6760 0x103C:0x161E 0x00).[ 3.809922] radeon 0000:01:00.0: VRAM: 512M 0x0000000000000000 - 0x000000001FFFFFFF (512M used)[ 3.809925] radeon 0000:01:00.0: GTT: 1024M 0x0000000020000000 - 0x000000005FFFFFFF[ 3.809930] [drm] Detected VRAM RAM=512M, BAR=256M[ 3.809931] [drm] RAM width 64bits DDR[ 3.809955] [drm] radeon: 512M of VRAM memory ready[ 3.809957] [drm] radeon: 1024M of GTT memory ready.[ 3.809963] [drm] Loading CAICOS Microcode[ 3.810059] [drm] Internal thermal controller with fan control[ 3.814323] [drm] radeon: dpm initialized[ 3.814426] [drm] GART: num cpu pages 262144, num gpu pages 262144[ 3.815067] [drm] enabling PCIE gen 2 link speeds, disable with radeon.pcie_gen2=0[ 3.822346] [drm] PCIE GART of 1024M enabled (table at 0x0000000000162000).[ 15.716898] fbcon: radeondrmfb (fb0) is primary device[ 16.251712] radeon 0000:01:00.0: [drm] fb0: radeondrmfb frame buffer device[ 16.273335] [drm] Initialized radeon 2.50.0 20080528 for 0000:01:00.0 on minor 0[ 18.672450] [drm] amdgpu kernel modesetting enabled.
I have tried the non-free firmware, which seemed to be automatically installed, maybe only on testing i don't recall. I currently have testing installed, and can get to the cli on f2 if there are some other logs or something we can look at. I can "boot" with nomodeset, but that only goes to a login screen. When I try to log in it takes user/pw then flicks a few times and comes back to the login. Tried using advanced boot into recovery, that was a no.

Debian is using: Linux savil 6.1.0-17-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.69-1 (2023-12-30) x86_64 GNU/Linux

lubuntu is using: Linux lubuntu 6.2.0-26-generic #26~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Jul 13 16:27:29 UTC 2 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
